The D.E.P.E coaching method is an easy way to remember the key steps in teaching a new skill or activity.
The method will uses 4 key stages in the diagram below.
Demonstrate: this should be used at the same time as the explanation. You can either demonstrate this yourself, or have players in you team demonstrate. It will allow visual learners to easily understand what you expect. This should account for 10% of the total skill or activity time.
Explain: Keep this short and simple. If you deliver too much information verbally, you will risk loosing players attention. This should account for 10% of the total skill or activity time.
Participate: This should make up most of the time with your players. Allow them to practice the skill or activity and learn by doing, if you spend too much time instructing the players they will have less time to practice. This should account for 70% of the total skill or activity time.
Evaluate: As the players are performing the skill, you should be observing and providing feedback to players. The feedback should be mostly positive and constructive. This should account for 10% of the total skill or activity time.
