Deliberate Play & Deliberate Practice

Deliberate Play & Deliberate Practice

The type of activity offered to players in a training environment can be defined as either deliberate play or deliberate practice. The development stage of the player determines the amount of time that should be spent on each type of activity.

Deliberate Play

Deliberate play is intrinsically motivating, designed to maximise fun and enjoyment and provide immediate gratification. It often required minimal equipment, is flexible and allows participants to experiment with rules, tactics, participant sizes and ages. (Bayley et al., 2010. Cote et al., 2009)

Deliberate Practice

Deliberate practice is a highly structured activity that requires effort, generates no immediate rewards, and is motivated by the goal of improving performance rather than inherent enjoyment. (Cote et al., 2009).
